Louise Balaam trained at Kent Institute of Art and Design, Canterbury (BA), and then at Canterbury Christchurch University where she gained her MA in Fine Art. Since then she has exhibited in a wide range of gallery and open submission shows. Solo shows include Ashford Library Gallery (2007), Trinity Gallery in Tunbridge Wells (2008), and Cadogan Contemporary in South Kensington (2010, 2011). Louise has recently been elected a member of the New English Art Club (NEAC).

Her work has been shown in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, the New English Art Club, the Discerning Eye, the Threadneedle Prize, RWA Open exhibitions, and the Royal Society of British Artists. She has won prizes at the Chichester Open Art Exhibition and the RWA (Odin Prize.) Recent group shows in galleries include Cadogan Gallery (South Kensington), Fairfax gallery (Tunbridge Wells), White Space Gallery (Totnes), Lynne Strover Gallery (Cambridge), and Porthminster Gallery (St Ives). She has many works in private collections.

Artists who have been particularly important to her include Constable, Turner, Winifred Nicholson, Joan Eardley, Morandi, Peter Lanyon, and Howard Hodgkin.

Louise writes about her work:

'My work is inspired by an emotional response to the natural world, in particular to the quality of light. I draw in the landscape, collecting information about particular places which have meaning for me. I want to put into the paintings the experience of being there, the weather, sounds, smells and the process of walking through the landscape, as much as what I can see. I then paint intuitively in the studio, using oil paint in direct and gestural brushstrokes. My paintings relate to the English landscape tradition, particularly Turner, and Constable’s oil sketches are an important influence. I am based in Kent but often travel to different parts of the UK, for example to Scotland or Cornwall, to draw and gather material there.'
