Sarah van Niekerk studied at Central School of Arts & Crafts (Central St. Martins) between 1951/4, before moving on to the Slade School of Fine Art UCL through 1955/6.

Sarah is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, a Royal West of England Academician, a member of the Society of Wood Engravers (Chairman 1995-98) and an Honorary Member of The Royal Birmingham Society of Artists.

Sarah has also been Tutor in wood engraving at West Dean College, the Royal Academy Schools (1976-86) and City and Guilds of London Art School (1979-98).

She is a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and Bankside Gallery, and contributed to"Art in Action" 1980-84 and 1987-88. Sarah also organised the "12 Wood Engravers" tour of 1994-95.

Over the years Sarah has received awards that include the Royal Bath & West Society Show (1992 & 1995), the Cornellissen Award (1989), the Coley & Tilley Prize (1997), SWE Prize 2000 and most recently the UWE Prize 2002 at RWA. Another facet of Sarah's career has been to provide numerous book illustrations for The Folio Society, The Gregynog Press, Oxford University Press, Rider Books, Pavilion, Readers Digest Association, The Foundling Press and the Primrose Academy Press.

Sarah van Niekirk has works in the collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum, Reading Museum, London Institute, UCLA, Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, Ashmoleon Museum, Oxford, Bristol Polytechnic (UWE), Freemantle Arts Centre, National Library of Wales, National Engravers Society, Russia, Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, Hereford Museum & Art Gallery, Graves Art Gallery, Sheffield, National Museum of Wales, Central St Martins Gallery and the Glenbow Museum, Calgary, Canada. She also has works in private collections in Australia, Canada, England, France, Germany, Greece, Japan, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland and the USA.
