Peter Coate 1926 - 2016

We are very sad to announce the death of RWA Academician Peter Coate, aged 90. A member of the Academy since 1970, Peter was a regular exhibitor in the Annual Open Exhibition. His career spanned over 60 years and we are proud to have a number of his works among our Permanent Collection. Our thoughts and sympathies are with his wife and family.

Peter was trained at Chelsea Art School and exhibited at the RA, the ROI, the Society of Wildlife Artists, the NEAC and the London Group.Born and bred in Somerset, he lived there for most of his life. His relations made a living from the land for generations, either by farming, apple growing, cider making, withy growing, basket and hurdle making and by producing most of the artists’ willow charcoal marketed world-wide. It is not surprising, therefore, that he was a landscape painter working out of doors and in wild places.

He has painted frequently in Somerset on the Mendips, where he started and ran The Mendip Painting Centre very successfully for twelve years. He also made regular excursions to Wales, the Lake District and East Anglia.
