Josie studied calligraphy, heraldry, illumination and bookbinding at Reigate School of Art and Design from 1979 to 1983, appreciating the traditional grounding from which to develop more contemporary approaches.
Her formal work is commissioned by the private, academic and military sectors including the Rothschilds, various universities, cathedrals and regiments, and takes the form of Freedom scrolls, family trees, Honorary books and illuminated addresses. However, Josie prefers to work with the client’s choice of words to interpret their meaning visually, with feeling. This for her, is the magic of creative lettering.
Josie has a Cert Ed and is an Accredited Tutor for the Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society, is a founder member of Gloucestershire Lettering Arts and has exhibited regularly with both of these and also the Society of Scribes and Illuminators. She has taught calligraphy and related arts since 1983, taking part in community arts projects and writing a wide range of accredited programmes in these specialist subjects. She is also an artist in residence annually at Nature in Art, Twigworth.
Her particular passions involve taking ancient techniques, especially in gilding and metalpoint, and applying them in more diverse and modern ways. She also explores book structures and how lettering and folding together can entice and intrigue rather than merely state.
