Margaret Lovell

I studied at the West of England College of Art in Bristol (1956-60) and the Slade School of Fine Art in London (1960-62), where I won first and second prizes for sculpture and etching. I was then awarded an Italian State Scholarship and studied at the Academy of Fine Art in Florence until 1963. This was followed by a Greek Government Scholarship allowing me to travel in Greece during 1965-66 and study classical and Cycladic sculpture. In addition to being a Fellow of the Royal British Society of Sculptors, I am a Member of the Royal West of England Academy. I was awarded an Honorary Degree of Letters by the University of Leicester in 2012 for 'distinguished contribution to sculpture’.

My sculptures are inspired by organic, natural forms, such as plants, and the elements of sea and wind. Often the sculptures consist of two individual forms in relationship to each other, striving to create a unified harmony. I also continually return to the head, a subject of fascination in conveying a character in a very simplified form.

I have exhibited extensively and undertaken many and various sculpture commissions across the UK, Europe and the USA. My works are held in private and public collections including University of London, Arts Council of Great Britain, Sainsbury Collection, Stanley Picker collection and Devon County Council. My sculpture is currently on view at Porthminster Gallery, St. Ives and Katharine House Gallery, Marlborough, and more locally Andelli Art, Wells and David Simon Contemporary, Bath. From later in 2016 work will also be available through Jonathan Grant Gallery, Auckland, New Zealand.
