Ros Cuthbert

"For me, the world is full of stories most of which I will never hear. People and places are immersed in their histories, and objects have a past which may only be guessed at. Our nuanced stories lend atmospheric charge to the fact of our existence in the present. I use paint to explore the relationship between the fact of a physical presence and my own subjective musing or empathy. Much of my work is carefully constructed, loving ambiguities of light, playing off one surface, space or shape against another, and revelling in the magic inherent in the familiar. Everywhere and everyone is exotic."

Award winning artist Ros Cuthbert MA (RCA) RWA, graduated from the Central School of Art and Design London in 1974. She was tutored by the visionary painter Cecil Collins, and studied relief printmaking with internationally respected wood engraver Blair Hughes-Stanton. She went on to study her MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art where she explored the figure, pattern and still life subjects, winning the Figurative art Prize in 1977. In 1981 Ros and her husband and baby daughter moved to Winscombe, North Somerset where she still lives and works.

Ros’s career spans five decades, and in that time she has worked in watercolour, oils, mixed media, and relief printmaking. She ran her fine book press, Yellow Fox Press, for 9 years, and collaborated with writers such as Helen Dunmore and Philip Gross. She has dedicated her life to mastering her craft, and exploring the cross over between the everyday and the more mystical, dreamlike spaces of the imagination.

She usually works in series. Her inspiration comes primarily from observing life around her; people, places, and objects. Her practice is concerned with both observation and interpretation, and involves a strong tendency to follow intuitive leads. Her work shares her love of atmosphere, a sense of magic and theatre, and is characterised by a delight in implied narrative.

In 1998 Ros became an RWA Academician at the Royal West of England Academy where she exhibits annually.

She has work in many public and private collections worldwide.
