This October the celebrated Coull Quartet, who have been on the international stage for several decades, will give a concert at the RWA. The concert will begin with the first string quartet of Mozart’s much-loved set of six dedicated to Haydn, his Quartet in G K387, a sublime composition, and will finish with Dvorak’s radiant, yet nostalgic, ‘American’ Quartet, one of his most popular works. Between these two quartets, the Coull will play Derek Smith’s Fifth Quartet, a powerful and moving work written in contemplation of human suffering whether at the hand of man or as a result of natural disasters, and a short elegy by Puccini, the supremely beautiful Crisantemi.

Black pigments have been around since humans discovered they could take a burnt stick and make a mark, drawing with charcoal. Black is rich and vibrant with potent life, it plays with colour, it focuses our attention. In this workshop you will engage in a variety of mark making techniques and materials to journey with black. Through structured exercises, alongside time for individual working, you will explore its qualities of richness and versatility, depth and subtlety. All basic materials provided.

This workshop will take participants through a three stage process to produce an oil portrait from a live model. Day one will be focused on constructing a characterful drawing which will be the foundation for a tonal painting in burnt umber. On day two the focus will be on colour and further modelling of form. Advice will be given on drawing, mixing tone and mixing colours from direct observation of the model. Some previous experience of drawing and painting is necessary. All basic materials provided
