Laurence Kell

Laurence grew up in Cornwall and studied at Falmouth School of Art and Design. His paintings reflect a strong connection to the visual world, with a particular focus on colour, observation, and compositional design.

Based in Bristol, Laurence creates a mix of landscapes, still lifes, and portrait commissions. He often paints familiar landmarks and hidden corners around the city, while continuing to develop his practice in portraiture and commissioned works for private clients across the UK.

Each year, Laurence welcomes visitors to his Bristol studio during the BV Open Studios weekend in Bedminster. His work has also been exhibited at major venues including the National Portrait Gallery, the Mall Galleries, and the Royal West of England Academy.

As a tutor, Laurence helps students strengthen their drawing and painting skills through direct observation and steady practice. He believes drawing is the foundation of all visual art, giving artists the confidence to develop their own creative voice.

Laurence’s oil painting workshops in Bristol focus on portraiture and still life. Combining practical techniques with an emphasis on observation and composition, he offers supportive, hands-on teaching for artists of all levels.
