What is poetry? This workshop with poet Leeza Awojobi will explore performance poetry as an encounter with your surroundings, your listeners and yourself. You'll have the opportunity to experience Leeza perform her own work and then be guided through the basics of writing poetry. Learn how to find inspiration, build your structure and share your work.

This workshop for 11-16 year olds will take inspiration from the exhibitions: Windrush: Portraits of a Pioneering Generation and Valda Jackson: Miss Polly (25 May - 11 August 2024)

"It is through encountering our surroundings and listeners that we encounter ourselves"

About Leeza Awojobi

Leeza is a performance poet based in Bristol who writes to explore what it means to be human and understand across divides. A keen learner of culture and theology, she gets excited when she sees threads extend within and across both.

She started her professional journey with the Creative Youth Network who commissioned her debut piece, A Meal Around Bristol and in 2021, was awarded the Developing Your Creative Practice fund to explore poetry through the lens of materials. She’s interested in what makes us tick, especially how our different worldviews affect the way we problem solve and interact with our surroundings. Right now, she is exploring interpersonal conflict through poetry and has facilitated workshops in venues such as Artist Residence and in secondary schools.

Suitable for young people ages 11 - 16.

Limited places available - booking recommended.

Adults must remain in the building but are encouraged to enjoy the café, galleries and RWA shop while their children are in the workshop. Accompanying Adults will receive complimentary exhibition entry.
